Somnia is an interdisciplinary performance project, focusing on movement and the use of media, mapping and visual resources. The performance is an abstract poetic piece. The dream surrounds and abducts an alternative reality, creating a metaphor where the body that no longer awakens. The charging frequency of this cycle.

Somnia is an interdisciplinary audiovisual dance performance created by Mexican contemporary dancer and choreographer Alejandra Metztli and Dutch immersive digital artist Jaco Schilp.

It explores the poetic processes within the human body and the dream states we experience during sleep. The performance language of movement is based multidimensionally in an energetic body that interprets a timeless reality.

The piece is inspired by the chemical substances secreted by the human brain, neuronal frequencies, and the subtle body that connects with the narratives we experience while dreaming. This concept is expressed in an interdisciplinary audiovisual dance performance. With use of motion tracking, videomapping and an immersive stage design.

The sound design was created in collaboration with Ben Spaander (aka Cosmic Force), Noah Zurhaar. In direction and production by Alejandra Metztli.

Somnia is the result of international artistic residence, supported by the Sistema de Apoyos a la Creación y Proyectos Culturales of the Mexican government. The residency took place at Uncloud, Netherlands, in 2024.
